If you are planning to stay at home this festive season, maybe a break to Maputo is just what you need.

Just an hour’s flight away and with no need for a visa, Joburgers can now skip the six-hour drive to Mozambique and save time getting through the land borders which are so often over-crowded over the holiday season.

“Mozambique is a very important market for us,” says Nico Bezuidenhout, fastjet CEO. “We will soon have the opportunity to offer daily flights between some of the main cities in the country at affordable fares.”

Mozambique’s capital offers a range of accommodation options for South Africans, in addition to restaurants, cafes and markets selling fresh seafood and produce. Dreaming of king prawns enjoyed in the sunshine with a 2M or two? Think no further than Maputo to ditch your December blues.

For families, there are a range of beach-based activities on offer in Maputo, as well as day trips to Santa Maria, Inhaca and the Portuguese Islands. The boat departs from the Marina (Escola Nautica) to Santa Maria in the morning, with a seafood lunch at Inhaca, and some snorkeling in between.

Various hotels in Maputo guarantee guests a vibrant Christmas and New Year's celebration. The Polana Hotel in particular, hosts a dinner on New Year’s Eve, along with a dance and a burst of fireworks at midnight.
