The drive towards the Fernery Lodge and Chalets in Tsitsikamma left much to be desired. The harsh gravel road made me feel nauseous.

Despite this, the Fernery with pine plantation, fern and fynbos paved the way to one of the most breathing sights you will ever see. Suddenly that harsh stretch of gravel road seemed to be worth it.

The Fernery sits above a 30 metre waterfall with views of the river gorge and the Indian Ocean.

The 4-star property offers peace, tranquility and an escape from the hustle and bustle of the real world.

The highlight of a recent stay was their beautiful themed suites, all decorated in opulence and comfort.

They offer garden, sea and river facing suites.  Each one is personalised with unique themes that will leave you in awe.

There are also 3 types of B&B chalets for larger groups.

I recently spent the night at their garden Victorian Suite. The suite was cosy and kept to the victorian theme perfectly.

The 5 things that I loved:

Decor

The room was laden with gold fixtures and Victorian style headlamps. Picture: Clinton Moodley.

The Victorian suite was accented with gold fixtures, Victorian style headlamps, cross-crossed designed night stands and gold chairs. The suite made us feel as if we were living in a bygone age.

Attention to detail

It is aspects like the fern-inspired key that shows the attention to detail that goes into their hotel. Picture: Clinton Moodley.

The Fernery exceeded expectations when it came to attention to detail. On arrival in my room, there was a personalised welcome note with a fern on it. The fresh smell of nature permeated the room

Heated towels, flooring and bed

Nights at the Fernery can get a bit chilly so it's nice to have heated bathroom flooring, heated towels and a heated bed. While the room is too small for a fireplace, having these amenities can warm up any cold winters night.

Bathroom

The white, gold and green themed bathroom exudes sophistication and luxury. Travellers can relax and catch up on their reading in the giant bathtub with a view of the fernery scubbery outside.

Privacy

The suites are spaced far apart so you do not have to worry about noisy neighbours or bumping into other guests. This makes it a perfect spot for couples and those wanting a bit of quiet time.
