A farmer, whose wife was brutally murdered in 1997 on their eatern Cape farm, was found bludgeoned to death in a shed on the same farm at the weekend.

Dawie Ludwig Deetlefs, 70, who was critically injured in the 1997 attack, was found lying on his stomach in a pool of blood by his son, Frans Deetlefs.

Police said the farmer was last seen alive by employees about 4pm on Saturday, shortly before he went to a cow shed, apparently to load spring guns.

When employees arrived at work on Sunday morning and found the house empty, they contacted the farmer's son.

A shotgun was missing from the house but the motive for the attack is still unclear.

In July 1997, Deetlefs and his wife, Veronica, were attacked by three men at their farmhouse.

The men demanded money and then slit their throats.

Mrs Deetlefs died at the scene while Mr Deetlefs was rushed to St Dominics Hospital where he recovered from his injuries.

Two men arrested for the crime are currently serving long jail sentences. - Sapa
