The Truth and Reconciliation Commission on Thursday granted amnesty to SA National Defence Force General Temba Templeton Matanzima.

Matanzima applied in Cape Town to the TRC's amnesty committee in connection with his his role in training soldiers and supplying arms to the African National Congress and Pan Africanist Congress from 1989 and 1994 in the Transkei.

Matanzima, a former commander of the Transkei Defence Force, said in his application that this was done to advance the liberation of South Africa.

The committee found Matanzima had made full disclosure and his actions were associated with a political motive. - Sapa
