An American tourist who was attacked by three young lions at a game lodge in Limpopo province is "up and about" and may be discharged by Friday.

Kimberly Thomen, 34, of Sugarland, Texas, was stroking a lion in an enclosure at the Leshoka Thabang Game Lodge, about 60km from Pietersburg, when the animal mauled her.

Thomen screamed and two other lions jumped onto her, inflicting serious wounds to her left arm and shoulder.

Lodge management declined to comment, saying only that the incident would be investigated. - Sapa
