Durban - Live music venues have long been an attraction especially for the middle to mature crowd.

Many have popped up around Durban, and with sunny skies for the better part of the year, what better way is there to spend your weekends than sipping a cocktail under the open sky, listening to live music.

No matter your musical tastes, you are sure to find something that tickles your fancy.

Here are a selection of must-visit live music venues:

l Beach Bums, Casuarina Beach, Westbrook

Enjoy an evening with your feet in the sand, enjoying some of Durban’s finest cuisine while savouring the live music.

Beach Bums offers a laid back atmosphere by day and a more up-tempo night vibe.

During the week, guests can enjoy a beachside music programme boasting various music genres. DJs perform every Saturday turning the beach into a dance floor while Sundays feature different bands every week.

Call: 032 943 1132 for table bookings.

l Wahooz, Durban Promenade

Wahooz plays host to a variety of vibrant South African bands every Saturday and Sunday. These include the Afro Divas, Afritude and the Warren Brothers.

It’s another music venue that provides al fresco dining, a chilled cocktail selection and a great beach vibe.

Open from 7.30am for breakfast until the uShaka Marine World closes at 5pm.

l The Rainbow Restaurant: 23 Stanfield Lane, Pinetown

The Rainbow Restaurant has a rich history. It has been around since 1981, during the apartheid era. Since then, it’s grown to be one of the best jazz lounges in the country, hosting music legends such as Busi Mhlongo, Darius Brubeck and Sandile Shange.

It also offers a relaxed atmosphere and homegrown food.

Don’t miss out on an opportunity to see Louis Mhlanga perform live on March 6.

l The Dutch, Corner Chartwell and Lighthouse Roads, Umhlanga

The Dutch is the perfect spot to enjoy with friends and family. Live performances are held nightly and usually start at 8pm.

Depending on the crowd, the music may even start earlier. Enjoy some craft beer or pair a glass of wine with your sushi or favourite tapas.

The Dutch will be introducing a new line-up of South African entertainers from March 4 when they relaunch their brand.

There will be an entertainment cover charge on Friday and Saturday evenings of R100 a person.

l Ku D’Ta, Wilson’s Wharf, Durban

With fantastic views of Durban harbour, it’s little wonder this is a favourite venue for many Durban locals.

The friendly staff serve up great food complemented by an extensive cocktail menu and if you hope to enjoy the relaxed Ku D’Ta vibe, try and get there early because tables are usually taken by 4pm at the weekend.
