Durban - Framed by a picturesque yet rugged landscape, the Thula Thula Private Game Reserve is the perfect KwaZulu-Natal bush retreat.

Once the hunting grounds of the mighty King Shaka, the reserve is steeped in rich history.

With a name that is isiZulu for “peace and tranquillity”, Thula Thula lives up to its reputation, providing its visitors with a welcome escape from the city.

It has abundant wildlife, including the elephants that the reserve’s late owner, Lawrence Anthony, wrote about in his best-seller, The Elephant Whisperer.

Guests will delight in exploring the reserve on game drives and guided walks.

Accommodation is at the Elephant Safari Lodge and a luxurious, Bedouin-style camp of tents that borders the scenic Enseleni River.

The tastefully appointed suites of the Elephant Safari Lodge are decorated in an Afro-colonial style, while the romantic Tented Camp is reminiscent of a safari camp of a bygone era.

Each spacious tent has a private viewing deck and a luxurious en suite bathroom, complete with a Victorian bath.

The lodge and camp have large entertainment areas, with lounge areas, bars and swimming pools.

Guests of the lodge are treated to delicious French-inspired cuisine, while traditional South African fare is served at the camp.

Thula Thula is in a malaria-free area, two hours’ drive from Durban and 45 minutes from Richards Bay.
