Soccer star Lucas Radebe appeared in the Themba Magistrate's Court on Thursday in connection with maintenance for his eight-year-old child.

The appearance followed an application by the child's mother, Pulane Baloyi, for child support of R10 000 a month.

The child lives with Baloyi in Themba.

An official at the court said the Bafana Bafana and Leeds captain was issued with a subpoena on June 25 to appear in court.

Radebe , who was accompanied by three people who appeared to be his legal representatives, was reluctant to speak to the press. "This is a private matter and I have no comment," he said.

From 2pm to just after 4pm, both parties were locked in discussions, which occured in the magistrate's chambers.

Baloyi was first to emerge from the courtroom, followed by Radebe's counsel - who attempted to fool the public into believing that the star footballer had left through another entrance.

But the fans were not going to be fooled easily.

A handful of young women rushed to the stairs to catch a glimpse of their hero, who managed to drive off quickly.

Baloyi, an official at the department of labour, said she had signed an undertaking not to speak to the media about her agreement with Radebe. - Pretoria Correspondent
