Tamara Groenewald, flying from Johannesburg to Durban on kulula.com flight MN610, was the airline's 5-millionth passenger.

Not bad for a no-frills airline which hit the skies less than five years ago.

Since taking to the skies, the low-fare airline has played a significant role in growing the country's domestic air travel market, and during this time many milestones have been notched up by the home-grown brand.

According to kulula.com marketing manager Nadine Damen, the airline, which has been operating since August 2001, has shown year-on-year growth of 20 percent, proving that the South African traveller has been eager to find value-for-money alternatives to traditional air travel offerings.

So successful has the airline been in its positioning that it has recently been recognised as South Africa's largest online retailer, boasting internet sales in excess of R3,5-million per day.

It has also grown its network offering to 12 destinations, and recently announced that it would be launching a rewards-based credit card within the next few months.

"Helping more and more South Africans take to our beautiful skies has always been our passion and drive. It will not be long before we announce our 10-millionth passenger, and we certainly look forward to celebrating that day in the near future" says Damen.
