An actress on the popular e.tv show Backstage was killed and two other people were injured in a car crash in Touwsriver, in the Boland, on Tuesday night, police said.

Police spokesperson Captain William Reid on Wednesday said the car in which Marubini Mogale was travelling seemingly capsized and landed on its roof.

All three occupants of the vehicle - Mogale, 21, who played Irene in the popular daily soap opera, her boyfriend Clint Edgar Brink, 21, and sister Lerato Mogale, 17 - fell out of the car.

Marubini Mogale died on the scene while Brink and Lerato Mogale sustained minor injuries, said Reid.

He said the two were in a stable condition at the Medi-Clinic in Worcester.

Brink might be transferred to a hospital in Paarl, but Lerato Mogale would remain under supervision at the Medi-Clinic.

"It seems like the driver lost control of the car, and it capsized and landed on its roof but on the opposite side of the road," said Reid.

He refused to say who the driver was because an investigation into the matter was under way. The driver would face a charge of culpable homicide.

Reid said the accident took place about 10km from Touwsriver around 7pm on Tuesday. He said the vehicle was travelling towards Cape Town.

Mogale was born in Pietersburg, Northern Province, on July 26, 1980.

After matric, Mogale studied fashion design, but later secured the part of Irene in the daily programme. Brink relocated to Cape Town and was among the lead characters on the show.

About 500 000 people watch the show daily, Pillay said. He sent the company's condolences to the Mogale family. - Sapa
