Walking the dog Joburg style

Your dog is looking up at you expectantly, wagging his tail. It's a perfect day for getting out and about, smelling new scents and exploring the wide open spaces. But where to go?

The answer is found in Dogwalk 4, a new publication from Tim Truluck and his trusty Jack Russell terrier, Pickle.

Together they have walked the paths of the parks and koppies of Gauteng and here they share their experiences.

This is the fourth volume, so a bit of space is devoted to updating the information in the first three, which dealt with Johannesburg walks; Johannesburg and country walks; and weekends away and more country walks.

In this book Tim and Pickle explore the Braamfontein Spruit in both Bryanston and Craighall Park, Gillooly's Farm, The Wilds, Melville Koppies, Lone Hill Koppie and Zoo Lake, all in Johannesburg, as well as Faery Glen, Fountains Valley and Garskloof in Pretoria and Kwamanzi in the Magaliesberg.

For each he includes a map and directions, a brief description of the walk and all kinds of useful information.

What is the dog policy, are there loos, water points, refreshments? What about security, litter and glass? What must you look out for? Any traffic hazards? Any costs? Any special features?

There is a special section on organised walks for dogwalkers who don't like to do it alone, plus some articles of interest to dog owners. If the koppies are calling, then grab a copy of this book, a dog lead, a water bottle, a hat, and, of course, your dog and get moving.

- You can get the book from your vet for R25.
