London - Visitors to the Auschwitz museum were shocked to find showers had been installed at the entrance of the former concentration camp to cool them off in the hot weather.

The sprinkler system, which sprayed a mist of water over people walking in after temperatures hit 37C (99F), resulted in complaints led by a group of Israeli visitors, who compared them to the showers used in the gas chambers where Jews were murdered.

At least 1.1 million people died at the Nazi camp in Poland, either by gassing or by being worked to death.

Visitor Meyer Bolka said seeing the showers was like a “punch in the gut”. He added: “They should have thought about the type of connotation this would raise. It was not a pleasant sight to see.”

In a statement, the museum said it did not mean to cause offence and the sprinklers had been introduced for the comfort of visitors.
