If each day feels like a repeat of the last, then take a break and head for Europe's centre of fun and relaxation situated around the Swiss village of Gstaad. Their billboards welcome you to "come up and slow down".

Celebrities who know Gstaad include John Travolta, Elizabeth Taylor, Roger Moore and Bernie Ecclestone of Grand Prix fame.

Switzerland is the perfect international hub at which to meet family. A recent travel offer was Cape Town/America return with a free Swiss stop over at R5 700, while a direct return flight to America was more, at R6 100.

Gstaad nestles in the South West Alps close to the 3 000m Glazier Alps, which have snow 365 days a year. Here you can see four countries and the panoramic view takes you back to the silent symmetry of a prehistoric ice age.

Inexpensive accommodation is available from R150-R275 per head in farmhouses.

Alternately, try one of the upmarket chalets like the Arc-en-Ciel, which has a river meandering alongside. Nearby is Les Diablerets, which specialises in children and family accommodation.

Take a relaxing cycle to the hamlet and feel the crisp air turbo-charge through your body in gusts of new health. Unwind in cool bars like the Horny Pub in Eggli and watch acrobatic barmen mix exotic cocktails.

Indulge yourself at a chocolate factory at Broc or try the region's famous gourmet Hobelkase cheese, which reduces cholesterol. Visit Switzerland's unofficial King of Cheese, Hanspeter Reust.

For friendly cuisine try the Hotel Bernerhof Inn or the Chlösterli Restaurant - ask for the tiny Roger Moore room.

Switzerland has a low crime rate and an efficient transport system. On a Swiss Pass you can criss-cross the country with unlimited use of railways, steamers and buses. A pass costs from R1 600 to R2 000.

Visit Montreux for the international jazz festival and visit former South African President Paul Kruger's house, where he died in exile. Or take a steamboat to a wine estate.

To satisfy all your cravings for adventure soar in a striking coral red and yellow air balloon with local Captain Hans Bust, a delightful commentator.

"Come up and slow down" - you deserve it. Your search for a perfect holiday has ended.
