Cape Town - This was the scene where cops found a 12-year-old behind the wheel of a car while his dad was drunk in the passenger seat.

There was also a three-year-old child in the car at the time.

The father has been slapped with a R1500 fine after he admitted he allowed his young son to drive his vehicle. It is believed the man also had an open bottle of Smirnoff Ice in the car.

A concerned citizen spotted the vehicle swerving dangerously across lanes along Lansdowne Road in Makhaza, Khayelitsha, on Saturday afternoon.

Matthew Adams said he was driving behind the vehicle and became worried when the car veered into oncoming traffic.

"While driving along Lansdowne Road," he said, "I noticed a white car veering from the left to the right side into the face of oncoming traffic.

"I could see the bad driving was quickly corrected by an adult who was occupying the front passenger seat."

Adams said he soon realised the driver was in fact a child and tried to overtake the car.

KID AT THE WHEEL

"At one stage when I assumed it was safe to do so, I decided to overtake the vehicle which was in front of me."

"But halfway through overtaking the car I saw it was being driven by a boy who could barely look over the dashboard, so I decided it would be safer to stay safely behind the car.

There were also a man and a younger boy in the car - so I called traffic services."

Within minutes, police cops were on the scene and the car was pulled over.

Director of law enforcement Robbie Robberts said: "The father indicated to the officers that he consented to his 12-year-old son to drive his vehicle. He was issued with a R1500 fine."

He said the City would be investigating the incident.
