There were virtually no signs of austerity as the motoring world congregated on an icy Detroit for the first major motor show of the year.
Despite persisting economic woes, the global market for luxury cars is still booming and there was plenty of extravagant new metal adorning the show stands at the Cobo Centre.
The show-stopper for us was Chevrolet's all-new Corvette Stingray, but it shared the limelight with many other hard-core performers, including the Audi RS 7, Mercedes E 63 and Bentley Continental GTC Speed.
Another widespread theme was that of practical luxury in small and medium-sized packages as we saw in the likes of Merc's new CLA, the Lexus IS and Infiniti Q50.
And let's not even begin on the glut of concept cars.
