Rustenburg – The Democratic Alliance in the North West is deeply concerned with the ties and affiliation that premier Supra Mahumapelo reportedly enjoys with the controversial Gupta family, party leader Joe McGluwa said on Tuesday.

“Coincidentally, the premier has embarked on an overseas trip to Dubai after the Gupta family reportedly packed their bags and fled to Dubai,” he said.

“Premier Mahumapelo has never been shy to praise the Guptas, during his state of the province address, he used the platform to proudly announce his affiliation with the Gupta family and praised them for all their investments in the province.”

McGluwa said the DA was urging Mahumapelo to be open and transparent regarding the current state of affairs between the North West and the Guptas.

He said they would work hard to uncover the full extent of how deep the Gupta ties were in the North West provincial government.

“We will work hard to ensure that anyone who has unduly benefitted in the Gupta-state relations faces the full might of the law.”

Mahumapelo was attending the Annual Investment Meeting (AIM) Congress, which started on Monday, in Dubai.

He was accompanied by the Agriculture, Culture and Tourism MECs, Manketsi Tlhape and Desbo Mohono, and MEC for Finance, Economy and Enterprise Development, Wendy Nelson, as well as representatives of North West Development Corporation.

They were expected to meet with companies in the sectors of agribusiness, energy, industrial manufacturing, leisure and tourism.
