Colombo, Sri Lanka - Former batsman Aravinda de Silva and his panel of Sri Lanka selectors resigned on Wednesday, a day after national captain Kumar Sangakkara quit.
The four-member panel wrote to the sports minister on Wednesday announcing its resignation, Sri Lanka Cricket secretary Nishantha Ranatunga said.
With the resignations, Sri Lanka is set for a total overhaul of key cricket positions following the team's loss to India in the World Cup final last Saturday.
“While, like everyone else associated with Sri Lanka Cricket we are also enormously disappointed at our not being able to annex the coveted World Cup, which was lost to India in a highly competitive final, we are very happy that we have been able to meet most of our objectives in a short space of time,” the selectors said in a letter signed by de Silva.
“In view of the fact that some major cricketing decisions have to be taken for the future of Sri Lanka cricket due to important assignments in the coming months, we would like to offer to step down immediately from the jobs of national selectors.”
The panel also included former international wicketkeeper and TV commentator Ranjith Fernando, former international Amal Silva and Shabir Asgaraly.
Sangakkara resigned from the one-day and Twenty20 captaincy with immediate effect on Tuesday and offered to continue as test captain for a short term to ensure smooth transition.
He said a young player must be appointed captain to lead the side into the 2015 World Cup co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand. - Sapa-AP
