Cape Town’s traffic authorities slapped thousands of motorists with hefty fines over the Easter holidays.

Authorities arrested no less than 332 motorists and issued nearly 105 000 fines in the past week.

This number of fines, of which 59% are speeding fines, has more than doubled compared to the previous week.

"Speed traps have made the long weekend and quieter roads their playing field and the number of offenses recorded testifies to this," said JP Smith, Cape Town's mayoral committee member for safety.

A total of 62 283 speeding offenses were recorded across Cape Town in the past week. It does not include an additional 38,174 fines issued by traffic officers for various other traffic offenses.

Smith advised offenders to pay their fines "or run the risk of ending up behind bars".

A total of 1368 motorists were arrested last week due to outstanding warrants.

The drivers of 22 unroadworthy vehicles were fined for that during this time while 35 drivers were fined for not having valid licenses.

Eight drivers were fined for failing to wear seat belts, and 48 were fined for the possession of unlicensed vehicles and 20 for slippery tires.

Cape Town traffic officers also impounded 200 public transport vehicles and arrested 52 drivers , 44 for drunk driving and eight for reckless and negligent driving.

Two suspects were arrested on Sunday for drunk driving while one was arrested for reckless and negligent driving and another when the authorities responded to a complaint of a road race in the streets of Bellville in the northern suburbs.

A hijacked vehicle was stopped at midnight on Saturday and two suspects were arrested.
