MEC for finance and economic development in the Western Cape, David Maynier will replace Debbie Schäfer as education MEC, Weekend Argus was told by two impeccable sources.

Schäfer tendered her resignation earlier this week. She served in the position for eight years and will leave office on May 15.

“I am in the fortunate position to have been offered a job in the legal sector in the UK, which I have accepted,” Schäfer said in a statement.

“I will be joining some of my family there which presents a unique opportunity for us to experience together.”

Western Cape Premier Alan Winde will announce Schäfer's replacement during a press briefing later this morning.

Mireille Mary Wenger will replace Maynier, Weekend Argus has learned.

Wenger is currently an alternate member on the Western Cape provincial legislature committee on finance, economic opportunities and tourism. She also chaired an ad-hoc Covid-19 committee in 2020.

Weekend Argus contacted Wegner about her appointment and she said: “I am unable to comment - the premier’s announcement is imminent.”

These changes were approved by the DA Federal council this morning.

Winde yesterday said that he is going to announce “exciting changes” to his cabinet.

“These bold changes will give life to these commitments, especially his announcements to create a new department for infrastructure and for mobility,” Winde said.

“An important moment presents itself to us, as we look to push forward and deliver on our priorities of jobs, safety and well-being for all.

“We know that we have to be bold, we need to re-think and we need to innovate, so that we deliver the government that you deserve.”

By the time of publication Weekend Argus could not establish who the new MEC for community safety will be.
