Cape Town - Khayelitsha police have initiated a 72-hour activation plan to get to the bottom of an incident that left five people with gunshot wounds on Tuesday night.

According to police spokesperson, Captain Frederick van Wyk, on Tuesday at about 7.30pm at the corners of Cosa and Dika streets, Site B, Khayelitsha, five people between the ages of 21 and 38 were left injured after unknown shooters opened fire on them.

“Five counts of attempted murder were opened for investigation,” he said.

“There were also two victims injured while running for cover. The unknown suspects fled and are yet to be arrested.”

The victims were transferred by private vehicles to a nearby medical facility for treatment.

Van Wyk added that the motive for this shooting incident was currently unknown.

“The 72-hour activation plan has been ordered for the arrest of the suspects.”

According to sources close to the incident, the shooting might be gang-related. Community members were scared to speak about what happened to the media.

Some were talking to each other saying, they had thought the mass shootings had died down.

Since March this year, 26 people have died from mass shootings in Khayelitsha

Police Minister Bheki Cele was in the area on Monday at an imbizo with men in Khayelitsha on gender-based violence and femicide, domestic violence, and sexual offences.
