Cape Town - Two children and their grandmother have perished in a fire in Heinz Park this morning.

Police have confirmed the victims are aged eight, six and 63-years-old woman.

Firefighters and police were called to the scene in Daffodil Street just after 6.30am.

The informal structure had caught alight and the remains of the children and their grandmother were sadly discovered underneath the debris.

Police have since opened an inquest docket for investigation.

Police spokesperson, Captain Frederick Van Wyk said: “Circumstances surrounding a shack fire this morning at 6am in Daffodil Street, Heinz Park, Samora Machel are under investigation.

“After the fire was extinguished by the fire brigade, three bodies, an eight-year-old girl, six-year-old boy and a 63-year-old woman were discovered.

“It is unknown how the fire started. An inquest case was opened for investigation.”

The City’s Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson, Jermaine Carelse added that the fire scene had affected other persons who were left displaced.

“Three people died when their informal structure caught alight this morning, August 25 , in Heinz Park,” said Carelse.

“The first arriving officer from Gugulethu Fire Station made a quick assessment to contain the fire before it spread to more property.

“During firefighting operations the bodies of an adult female and two minors, a boy and girl, were found under the debris. Several persons were displaced and the fire was extinguished.

“The cause of the fire is not yet known and the scene was handed over to the South African Police Service,” Carelse said.
