NEARLY 14 months later, a 48-year-old security guard was been arrested and charged with a Macassar cash-in-transit heist.

On Thursday Momelezi Jikwana made his first appearance at the Somerset West Magistrate’s Court on charges of armed robbery.

Jikwana, is accused of being one of the guards involved the a cash-in-transit heist at the Macassar shopping centre, with several robbers armed with assault rifles in April last year.

Zinzi Hani, a spokesperson for the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, said the suspect was arrested by the Hawks’ National Priority Violent Crimes (NPVC) team in Bellville on Wednesday, while he in custody on another matter.

At the time of the incident, the suspects fled the scene towards Stellenbosch and were suspected to have ended up in Kayamandi township.

One getaway vehicle was cornered and there was an exchange of gunfire between the robbers and police.

Hani said the suspects were found in Kayamandi taxi rank where Milton Vundla, Simosakhe Ngxono and Sakhumuzi Dlongwana Manciphi were arrested and charged in connection with the heist.

“Five firearms, including three AK-47 rifles as well as five vehicles were seized.

“Two of the vehicles had been hijacked by the suspects as they fled the Macassar scene,” said Hani

In a video posted on social media on the day of the heist, shoppers are heard screaming while approximately ten shots are fired.

At the time of the incident, a 39-year-old police sergeant and a security guard were shot and wounded after the armed men fired shots.

The group is expected to appear back in court on July 15 after the matter was transferred to the regional court.
