Cape Town - Gospel singer Lusanda Mcinga is the latest celebrity to appeal for donations from fans via social media.

The recent trend has seen an increase in the number of celebrities who appeal for financial assistance from fans on Facebook and Twitter.

Lusanda from the Lusanda Spiritual group recently posted a video asking for donations, saying she wants to make music again. She has not recorded anything since 2020 because of Covid-19. She said she has been struggling with her finances because she could not get any gigs during this time.

“All my cars were repossessed by the bank because I was not able to pay them,” said Lusanda.

Her son Bethusile Mcinga is supporting his mother in every way he can, but it is not enough because she wants to be back in the studio and start recording again and needs money to pay for the studio and equipment.

“I am making this video because I want to make music again, and I do not want my supporters to wonder what happened to me. I want to be back in the studio because I do not have funds. I am asking for anyone who can help me. Any amount will make a difference”, added Lusanda.

About two months ago, South African actor Vusi Thanda was also asking for money on social media, claiming that he was struggling financially. Fans and a local sportswear brand opened their wallets and donated over R130 000 to the veteran actor.

Musician Doctor Malinga, whose real name is Goodwill Malinga, also took to social media appealing for financial help when he owed the South African Revenue Services over R2.1million. Fans and members of the public helped raise R100 000 towards his tax bill.

Malinga also said he was struggling as a result of not being able to perform during Covid-19.
