Melbourne - West Indies cricketer Marlon Black was knocked down by a car and attacked by four men outside a Melbourne night club, team officials said on Monday.

The fast bowler was celebrating the end of the West Indies' three-month tour when he was chased by four men in a car and then beaten with a wooden bat, West Indies team manager Ricky Skerritt said.

Black went out with two team-mates after an official dinner on Saturday night and was allegedly attacked after exchanging words with a group of men he saw smashing bottles on the road at about 4am local time on Sunday, Skerritt said.

Black was taken to hospital and received 10 stitches to a cut to the head. He also sustained bruising and superficial wounds, although he was expected to return to the Caribbean with his team-mates later Monday.

"He is in great pain and discomfort and feels very depressed about the whole incident," Skerritt told reporters.

Victorian state police have not identified Black as the victim of an assault, but confirmed they were investigating the incident.

"Marlon was an innocent victim," Skerritt said. "He went out to have a little party on his last night in Australia and he comes out of a nightclub at 4am and this happens... It's a bitter end."

The West Indies lost all five Tests against Australia and, after edging out Zimbabwe to reach the finals of the triangular-series limited-overs competition, lost the best-of-three-match finals series 2-0. - Sapa-AP
