A small fashion project that was started to make ends meet has resulted in a line of trendy T-shirts for its creator Sbu Mbokazi.

Sbu, 30, of Pinetown, says he has struggled to find full-time employment since leaving school and computer college. In between part-time jobs, however, his creative talents have come to the rescue. He made up a couple of Zulu Swagg shirts, with shield and spear motif – and they were a hit with friends.

“People started asking me to make them for friends and as word spread, I started getting orders from Johannesburg.”

Celebs have been spotted in them, too – Abdul Khoza who won SABC1’s Class Act has worn one in New York, getting a thumbs up and many enquiries about the catchy design, he says.

The shirts look great on women, too, with Sbu’s sister, Thando, 32, being his greatest fan and marketing assistant.

“This has the potential to go far,” she says.
