Punt forward to the middle of 2011 and Peugeot will introduce a sedan version of its new 508 "large car", first shown at the 2010 Geneva auto show as the SR1 concept car as a hybrid hard-top convertible.

Peugeot says the 508 "combines a stylish and strong design with cutting-edge technology; quality, purity and efficiency were the watchwords that guided designers and engineers during the creation of the 508".

The cabin, the automaker says, "combines hi-tech with high quality materials in exceptional interior space" while there's a spacioius boot and top-end standard specifications.

In line with Peugeot's strategy to produce vehicles that emit low levels of CO2 and good fuel efficiency, the 508 has been designed "to optimise the performance of its engines, enhance environmental efficiency, reduce weight and improve aerodynamics, matched at all times to a broad range of highly efficient engines".

The Peugeot 508 will be powered by a range of engines focused on performance, driveability, fuel economy and low CO2 emissions and equipped with stop/start tech that, Peugeot claims, lop 15 percent off fuel consumption.

Peugeot SA is unable to specify engine choice - or choices - for the car. Which means the option of HYbrid4 technology with the promise of 150kW power, all-wheel drive and CO2 emissions of 99g/km - zero in pure electric drive - might only be way in the future.

If at all.

In other markets the Peugeot 508 will be available in two body styles: the sedan expected in South Africa with a length of 4.79m and a station wagon two centimetres longer.

Both will be revealed in final form in October at the Paris auto show and go on sale from early 2011.

The cars will be assembled in France and China.
