Johannesburg - An extremely rare 1958 Mercedes-Benz 220S Coupé, first owned by Mary Oppenheimer, is set to be auctioned off in Johannesburg next week.

This pristine black example was first imported to the Union of South Africa in 1958 as a special order for Mrs Oppenheimer, who sold it shortly afterward because she didn’t like the column shift. Its next owners, the wealthy Prowse family (the daughter, Juliet Prowse was a world famous dancer and actress) kept it until the early 2000s.

According to auctioneers Stephan Welz & Co, only 1251 of this particular Coupé model were built, and even fewer were right-hand drive.

The 220S Coupe will go under the hammer as part of the Stephan Welz & Co Fine Art & Collectables Auction at Nelson Mandela Square on November 17 and 18. Pre-auction viewing is open to the public from November 11 to 16.

Catalogues will be available from both the Cape Town and Johannesburg offices as well as on www.stephanwelzandco.co.za.
