Durban — The KwaZulu-Natal Education MEC Mbali Frazer has committed to building Inkosi Thathezakhe Special School in rural Nquthu, northern KZN.
Frazer visited the school after it made a submission to Agriculture and Rural Development MEC Bongi Sithole-Moloi during her official work in the district and requested government intervention. Sithole-Moloi then submitted the matter to Frazer.
The school has been operating in prefab mobile classrooms since its inception in 2015 and has a total enrolment of 149 pupils with special needs. The school offers both academic and practical skills programmes.
Frazer and Sithole-Moloi visited the school on Friday.
The department said that sounds of ululation and applause filled the packed marquee when Frazer announced that construction for the school will begin next year.
“On Monday, December 5, 2022, engineers from the Department of Education will be here to start work in terms of the necessary assessments that need to be done before construction commences. The construction of the brick and mortar structure will start in the new financial year (2023/2024) which begins in April next year,” Frazer said when addressing pupils, teachers and parents.
The department said that since the first democratic elections in 1994, the government, through the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, ensured that the rights of all South Africans are respected.
“The Constitution states that everyone has a right to basic education. It is for this reason that we will build you a school,” Frazer said.
The MEC also committed to helping pupils by donating school uniforms.
