The 90-year-old landmark ‘house that GV built’ on Casuarina Beach was torn down in less than an hour on Thursday.

It is not clear why the iconic ‘ghost house of Seatides’, next to the M4 between uMhlanga and Ballito was demolished, after standing abandoned for more than 20 years.

It was built by Gurusamy Veerasamy ‘GV’ Naidu, an Indian businessman who came to Durban in the 1920s to explore business prospects. His descendants own the Royal and Coastlands Hotels in Durban.

Situated near Beach Bums restaurant, graffiti artists brought life back to the shell of a house. Set against the backdrop of the Indian Ocean, the house has been used as the set of many photo shoots, professional and otherwise.

The iconic building was reduced to a heap of rubble by an excavator.
