Durban - A Phoenix resident was lucky to be alive after he was hijacked in Dewstone Crescent on Wednesday.

Four men had approached the resident from either side while he was seated in his Toyota Corolla just after 8 pm.

One of the men produced a gun and pointed it at him. They forced him out of the car at gunpoint.

Umesh Singh, Phoenix Community Policing Forum Chairperson, said two of the hijackers got into the car and drove off.

The other two hijackers fled on foot.  One of the hijackers fired a shot into the air while driving off.

Singh said the car was later found by police in KwaMashu C section.

"It is fortunate that the victim was not injured or shot during the hijacking. Crime is on the increase and residents need to take precaution where ever they are as these criminals pounce on unsuspecting victims. One should refrain from sitting in their vehicles on the roadside especially in the dark. This increases the chances of being hijacked," Singh advised.

Phoenix SAPS is investigating a case of armed robbery.
