Durban - A tactical operation conducted in Phoenix, north of Durban, resulted in the arrest of a 36-year-old man and the recovery of a firearm and ammunition.

Metro Police officers arrested a man in Sastri Park after he was found in possession of a firearm and ammunition on Monday.

Metro Police Commissioner Steve Middleton said the man was arrested during a tactical operation in Phoenix for the unlawful possession of a firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition.

Middleton said the firearm was positively identified to have been from a case that took place in Empangeni, northern KZN, to the value of R10 000. The firearm had five 9mm rounds and one magazine.

SAPS spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele said the man was expected to appear in the Verulam Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

Mbele also said that the case the firearm was linked to took place on June 10, 2020 at 4.15am.

“A group of unknown males entered the house on Conrad Avenue in Kildare and robbed the occupants of a safe with a firearm, jewellery, and cellphone. A case of house robbery was opened at Empangeni police station for investigation,” said Mbele.

Middleton also said an operation was conducted at “Tsotsi” car wash in Terrence Park Drive, Phoenix, where a shooting had occurred on Sunday.

Units involved were Counter Narcotics Crime Intelligence and the Metro Drug Team.

According to Mbele, two groups had a dispute on Trenance Park Drive, on Sunday afternoon. Two people were shot in the fracas and are recovering in hospital, while an off-duty sergeant from the Durban Flying Squad was run over by a car.
