Pretoria - Only three fans of disgraced Oscar Pistorius were outside the high court in Pretoria on Wednesday ahead of his sentencing for the 2013 murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

The supporters carried posters saying “Never done on purpose” and “Do not judge”.

Athina Alex and her daughter Theodorah Alex from Johannesburg said they had been supporting Oscar from the beginning because they did not believe he intended to kill Steenkamp.

“I don’t believe that he shot her wanting to kill her,” said Athina. She said the court should also consider that Pistorius was a first-time offender and that the case had drained him emotionally.

“Whatever the court decides, God is the only one who can judge him. The courts are not God,” she concluded.

Emsie Hanker, also of Johannesburg, said this was the first time she had come to support Pistorius publicly. “I’m here today because I feel this is enough. This is not the first time this has happened. People kill all the time but they are not punished like this.”
