Durban - The Phoenix Child Welfare (PCW) organisation has been dealt a major blow to its operations after one of its bakkies was stolen on Thursday.

Aroona Chetty, the Director of PCW, said the Toyota Hilux single cab bakkie was stolen from their premises in the early hours of the morning. Chetty said they were devastated when they heard the news because it will affect their operational plans.

The bakkie had a canopy and signage with the logo and name of the organisation on both doors. The bakkie was used to transport people, pick up donations and goods and assist the needy if they needed transport.

"It has impacted on us negatively. On Wednesday we delivered a set of furniture to a destitute family with the bakkie. It was our only bakkie and it could carry and deliver the items we needed. We also distribute food to needy families," Chetty said.

The PCW provides services and resources for the protection of children and preservation of families through developmental programmes in the communities of Phoenix, Mount Moriah and Mount Royal

They deal with child protection issues, youth development, children's foundations and community projects like HIV and Aids.

Chetty said they have left the incident for the police to investigate.
