Durban — The pupil who allegedly shot a teacher who reprimanded him for making a noise while matric pupils were writing an exam is alleged to have stolen the gun from his cousin.
National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson in KwaZulu-Natal, Natasha Ramkisson-Kara, said the pupil, 16, appeared in the Ntuzuma Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday on charges of attempted murder and theft of a firearm.
“The State is alleging that he stole his cousin’s firearm from a locked safe and took it to school. At school, he allegedly shot at a teacher.
“The matter was remanded to January 12, 2023, for further investigations. The learner was released into the custody of a guardian,” Ramkisson-Kara said.
On Tuesday, the Daily News reported that the SAPS had said that at about 11.30am last Thursday, a pupil shot a 30-year-old teacher after he reprimanded him for making noise while matric pupils were writing an exam.
It is alleged that after being reprimanded, the pupil threatened the teacher and told him that he would shoot him once the school was out, which he allegedly did.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Nqobile Gwala confirmed the incident and said a case of attempted murder was being investigated by Inanda SAPS.
KZN Education Department spokesperson Muzi Mahlambi urged society to lend a helping hand in dealing with pupils’ behaviour.
“We can confirm the incident and that the learner was arrested. We are disturbed that learners conduct themselves in such a manner. The educator was reprimanding him not to make noise while the matriculants were writing,” said Mahlambi.
