A truck belonging to eThekwini Municipality was set alight by angry Kennedy Road shack dwellers who had been evicted by the eThekwini Land Invasion Unit.

Durban - Minutes after the eThekwini Municipality’s Land Invasion Unit left the Kennedy Road informal settlement, angry shack dwellers ran on to Bisasar Road in Springfield and petrol bombed a passing municipal truck.

Police said the land invasion unit had on Thursday evicted several people who had illegally built shacks.

In retaliation, a group of 50 people stoned and then burnt the truck at the Electron Road intersection. The group fled leaving the truck to burn.

The informal settlement borders on Bisasar Road. The driver of the truck escaped unharmed.

Sydenham police have registered a case of malicious damage to property.

Satish Dhupelia, Sydenham Community Police Forum spokesman, said he had urged residents at many meetings to contact their local ward councillor or ward committee to resolve issues. He condemned the behaviour of the disgruntled group.
