Durban — Two men aged 34 and 43 were fatally wounded on Monday at The Atrium at Eshowe around 5.50pm, by unknown suspects who came to the mall and opened fire.

One man was a security guard at Delta Force Elite Security Solutions.

Police spokesperson Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo confirmed the incident and said police at Eshowe are investigating two counts of murder.

“On September 5, 2022, at 5.50pm, two men aged 34 and 43 were at a business premises when they were fatally shot by unknown suspects.

“They sustained gunshot wounds to the head and body. The first victim was on duty as a security guard and the second victim was a former colleague.

“It is alleged that the two were conversing when unknown suspects opened fire. The motive for the killing is unknown,” said Ngcobo.

In a statement Delta Force Elite Security Solutions extended its condolences to the family of the security officer. The company said that on September 1 it took over security management and assigned one of its officers to lead the security department, as he was one of the best when it came to maintaining order and peace at shopping centres.

“The officer tragically passed away on Monday after being fatally wounded. The company has suffered a great loss. We would like to assure The Atrium’s customers that their security and safety will not be compromised,” said the security company.

It also said it had boosted security at The Atrium with immediate effect to ensure that similar incidents become a thing for the past. The company also thanked customers for co-operating with it on Monday when the incident occurred and they were asked to leave.

The Atrium extended its condolences to the family and friends of the two victims.
