Durban - More than a dozen passengers were injured when two eThekwini Municipality buses collided on Umgeni Road Connaught Bridge as rain pelted the city on Wednesday.

The buses were travelling from Chris Hani (North Coast) Road to join Umgeni Road Durban bound when one of the buses allegedly collided into the back of the other. The two traffic lanes into Durban is one of the busiest routes into the city from the northern areas. Traffic was severely backed up in the Riverside area an alternative route through Blue Lagoon.

Superintendent Parboo Sewpersad, a Durban Metro police spokesperson, said the police are on the scene establishing the facts around the crash before. The roadway has been reopened.

"Traffic is slow moving. Traffic is backed up in all directions on Umgeni Road towards Alpine and Springfield Park and vehicles coming in from the Northern areas like Sea Cow Lake, Greenwood Park, Avoca and KwaMashu," he said.

Garrith Jamieson, a spokesperson for Rescue Care Paramedics, said they were still assessing the injured.

The buses belong to an eThekwini municipality contractor Transnat.

Paramedics also attended to a  multiple mini-bus taxi pile up on Umgeni Road near Kolling Rd at 05:30. Two people were injured and were stabilised on before being transported to a nearby hospital
