DURBAN - A motorist was burnt beyond recognition when their vehicle crashed and burst into flames on the M4 North highway in the early hours of Saturday morning.
The crash happened at about 2am on the Ruth First Highway in the vicinity of the Umgeni River Bridge.
Police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala said the car, a Renault, had one occupant inside. She said the car crashed into a pole and burst into flames. She said the occupant was burnt beyond recognition and DNA analysis would be required to determine the identity of the deceased.
Police were investigating a case of culpable homicide, she said.
Crisis Medical Services reported to the scene and said there was nothing paramedics could do.
“Unfortunately there was nothing paramedics could do to assist and the single occupant of the vehicle was declared deceased on the scene. The scene was secured and handed over to the South African Police Services for further investigation and processing,” said Kyle van Reenen, a spokesperson for Crisis Medical.
