Durban — Addressing students and other student movements and youth leaders gathered at the Unite Building, Howard College of the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), ANC presidential hopeful and candidate Dr Zweli Mkhize told his followers and enthusiasts that they are the future of South Africa.

Mkhize was speaking to a lecture hall full of students from higher education institutions and high school pupils from around Durban and surrounding areas on Tuesday.

As he embarked on his motivational speech, Mkhize narrated a story of his days as a student at the then-University of Natal (now UKZN), saying: “Many years ago, we fought for free education as students in this very campus, of which many of you are today enjoying the freedoms. You must always remember that you are the results of the movement we staged all those many years ago,” Mkhize stressed.

In his engagement, Dr Mkhize told the students that they need to focus on their education, adding: “Because you need education in order for you to be a good leader. “Always know and remember that the life of a person without education is dead,” Mkhize said emphatically.

“As students of days past, we were prepared to fight and die for the vision of a better South Africa, for all that we needed, felt we deserved and believed in.”

“You are the owners of South Africa and the future of this country we call home. Therefore, you must unite in the fight and liberation for all those who live in it.

“The ANC’s vision to create a better life for all should be embraced by all those who clamour for a united South Africa and a better life for all who live in it,” Mkhize added.

Mkhize continued motivating the students, saying: “As we fight for a national democratic society, we must all do our best to make a difference in the lives of our people, and for the society, at large.

“As the future of SA, you must fight for the elimination of hunger and suffering that many of our people are facing and going through daily in their lives.

“Education is about giving you knowledge that is going to be your weapon to fight for a better life and future.

“I urge you and implore you, adopt a ‘no give-up’ attitude as you enter this new era in our struggle for freedom towards a better life for all and for a brighter future,” he concluded.
