OPINION - I respond to the letter “IFP not relevant to Indian community” by Kevin Govender in the Daily News (October 29).

Individuals have a constitutional right to express their views.

I respect the contribution of many excellent writers, including Kevin Govender.

But in that article, Govender has gone overboard.

He has shown the greatest disrespect for one of the finest human beings this country has produced.

Undoubtedly, Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi has one of the most fertile brains among all politicians in South Africa.

I have seen confused minds among IFP politicians and on one occasion recently the only voice of reason was that of Buthelezi. Personally, I hope and pray that he remains in control for as long as his health permits.

I agree with the writer that some of the Indians in leadership positions are not worthy of the status they enjoy.

Some got in because they “captured” the IFP.

The IFP should investigate how some Indians were promoted into senior positions.

One was not able to get a dozen people to an IFP branch meeting, but was on top of the list, even without a constituency.

As far as I remember, Vinesh Sunker was able to garner 1000 votes. What happened?

My appeal to everyone: show respect to our senior statesman. Let’s celebrate the great life and contribution of Mangosuthu Buthelezi.
