Durban - A 68-year-old man was shot dead at his home in eMkhomazi (Umkomaas) on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast on Thursday.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Shawn Herbst said in a statement on Thursday that at about 8.35am, paramedics responded to a shooting suspected to be linked to taxi violence.

Herbst said according to reports received, gunmen in a single vehicle stopped outside the victim’s gate and when he exited his house to investigate they opened fire.

“As he approached the gate, the gunmen opened fire, using high calibre weapons. When medics arrived they found a man lying face-down in a pool of blood in the garden,” he said.

He said the patient, whose body was riddled with gunshot wounds, was declared dead on the scene.

Provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Nqobile Gwala said a case of murder is being investigated by Umkomaas SAPS.

“It is alleged that the victim, aged 68 years, was at his home in Roseneath when two unknown men entered and fired shots at him. He sustained injuries and died at the scene,” she said.

Police said the matter was under investigation.
