Durban- A 25-year-old man believed to have been a security guard at the King Shaka international Airport was knocked down and killed by a car this morning on Ndwedwe Road in Cottonlands.

According to the emergency services company Reaction Unit South Africa, at around 7am on Tuesday morning, their members were dispatched to the scene after receiving multiple calls from the public reporting the incident.

Upon arrival, medics assessed the guard and found that he had sustained life threatening injuries. He was declared dead on the scene.  

“The deceased was a security officer based at King Shaka International Airport in KZN and was on his way to work when he was run over. According to witnesses he had his earphones on while crossing the road,” said the organisation on a statement.

It said the car was extensively damaged in the accident but the driver was not injured.  The car managed to come to a stop approximately 100 metres away from the point of impact.

Police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbhele said,“A case of culpable homicide was opened at Verulam police station for investigation."
