Ballito cyclist dies after taxi knocks him down

DURBAN - A CYCLIST was knocked down and killed by a taxi while cycling in Ballito near the N2 on Monday morning.

This was the second time this month that a cyclist has been hit and killed by a taxi in Durban.

Police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala said a cyclist, believed to be in his thirties, was knocked down by a taxi at the Shakashead off-ramp at 8am on Monday. The victim was certified dead at the scene.

She said the circumstances surrounding the incident were being investigated, and the by Umhlali SAPS were investigating a case of culpable homicide.

IPSS Medical Rescue spokesperson Paul Herbst said when their advanced life support paramedics arrived at the scene, it was established that the man had been cycling when he was struck by a taxi.

Herbst said the man showed no signs of life and was declared dead at the scene.

Meanwhile, Sydenham SAPS were investigating a case of culpable homicide after a cyclist was knocked down by a taxi on June 15.

Gwala said the 26-year-old male victim was cycling on the N2 southbound at the time of the incident.
