Boy drowns in Durban

A young boy was swept away after waves washed over a sand bank where he and a group of children had been playing on Saturday.

The incident took place in Durban, and the children had been playing on the sandbank between the lagoon and the surf.

At 4:39pm on Saturday, the Durban National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) crew were called to respond to the call for help. Their sea rescue craft was preparing to launch and Netcare911 ambulance services, IPSS medical rescue, the SAPS Search and Rescue and NSRI swimmers also responded directly to the scene.

On arrival, it was confirmed that the boy was missing,and was under water in the lagoon.

The body of the child was recovered by the Search and Rescue team, after an extensive search of the area. 

The child was declared dead by the paramedics and was taken into the care of the forensic pathology Services.
