Durban – The City of uMhlathuze on KwaZulu-Natal’s North Coast has received a second power transformer.

Mayor Xolani Ngwezi received the 132/11kV 40MVA power transformer at the Hercules substation in Richards Bay central yesterday.

In October 2021, the municipality said it was setting aside R130 million to buy six new transformers to address the power outage issues that were affecting several areas.

Ngwezi said the transformer would be up and running within the next two weeks.

“This transformer is expected to improve the reliability of supply to areas and households in Aquadene, Brackenham, Wild En Weide, Veld en Vlei, Birdswood, Arboretum and industrial customers and subsequently relieve the network supplied by the Polaris substation that supplies most industries in the Alton area, Richards Bay.

“This is a second transformer to be delivered. The first one was delivered about two months ago at the Polaris substation and is already up and running, easing power pressure.”

Ngwezi said the two transformers would help to ensure that residents and businesses had stable power supply.

“It is our duty to ensure that our infrastructure is resilient for business to go on as usual.”
