Durban police recover car stolen in Musgrave on Tuesday, arrest three suspects after shootout

DURBAN - Police officers from the Provincial Trio Task Team arrested three suspects following a shoot-out with police in Lamontville yesterday.

The team were conducting patrols along Mhlongo Road in Lamontville when they received information about a hijacked vehicle that was driving around in the area.

Police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele said the team followed up on this information and spotted the vehicle with no registration plates on Mpanza Road and a chase ensued.

“Several shots were fired by the suspects directed at the police officers. A shoot-out ensued and the suspects were intercepted. One of the suspects alighted from the vehicle and fled into the nearby houses,”said Mbele.

Police were able to arrest three suspects, aged between 21 and 27.

“The driver of the said vehicle was injured and was taken to hospital where he is under police guard,” she said.

Mbele said a preliminary investigation was conducted by police at the scene which revealed that the vehicle was hijacked on Musgrave Road on Tuesday.

A case was opened at Lamontville SAPS and the suspects were charged with attempted murder and possession of stolen property.

The suspects are expected to appear in the Durban Magistrates Court on Friday.
