Durban - The city has issued an alert to eThekwini residents that waste collection services in some regions are being affected by a go-slow by some staff.

On Tuesday, the municipality said cleansing and solid waste employees in some regions have embarked on an illegal go-slow due to the 50% overtime cut.

The reduction of overtime was implemented as of August 1, 2022, said the city.

According to the municipality, this go-slow is impacting on waste collection and street-sweeping services around the municipality.

“The city apologises to residents and business for the inconvenience that is caused by this illegal go-slow,” it said.

The municipality said it would be looking into alternative measures of providing waste services until the situation is resolved.

“The department is closely monitoring the situation,” said the city.

Earlier this year, the city threatened to fire more than 100 Durban Solid Waste Unit staff who had embarked on an illegal strike due to a grievance complaint they had filed against one of their managers that had not gone in their favour.

“The Mercury” reported that the manager had questioned the authenticity of some of the overtime claims that some workers had filed. They pushed for this manager to be removed from the position, alleging they had been ill-treated. But after an investigation into the allegations, the manager was cleared

The municipality secured an interdict against the striking workers who were reported to have returned to work a week later.
