DURBAN - Operations at Msunduzi Municipality’s call centre ground to a halt on Wednesday after a fire broke out in the municipality’s main building.

“The main call centre will not be operational until 18pm today due to a fire on the floor in the AS Chetty building, the municipality apologises to customers over the inconvenience,” read the statement on the municipality’s social media account.

The municipality’s spokesperson Thobeka Mafumbatha said the fire erupted during the day and had been put out by the afternoon.

She would not disclose the cause of the fire, but insisted that the centre would be fully operational by the evening.

In the meantime customers were advised to use the numbers: 033 348 2179 or 033 348 2607 when seeking assistance.

Over the past year, the management of the call centre has been one of the municipality’s setbacks, with customers often complaining that their calls were not answered promptly.
