Durban: The City of uMhlathuze in northern KwaZulu-Natal has encouraged residents to store water as the eSikhaleni Water Treatment Plant pump station is not operational after a fire destroyed water supply equipment.

The municipality says water supply to eSikhaleni Cluster (eSikhaleni Township, Vulindlela, Felixton, Madlankala, Gobandlovu, Mkhwanazi North and South) will be interrupted.

According to municipality spokesperson Bongani Gina, the generators were not affected; however, the generator control panel was damaged..

“The 2.5 MVA transformer was completely burnt; control panel for HLPs and Raw Water completely burnt.

“All interconnecting cables for generators, transformer and MCC were burnt. Control panel for de-watering pumps was burnt.”

The water restrictions would affect 13 wards in the municipality.

Gina said contractors were attending to the breakdown.

“Contractors have been instructed to provide the petrol pump to prevent basement flooding.

“The municipality is working hard to restore water supply as soon as possible,” he said.
