Durban -The KwaZulu-Natal Liquor Authority said that responsible drinking needs to be encouraged this festive season as alcohol plays a role in road accidents and drownings.

The authority will today (Friday) join the Department of Transport at the Umvoti Toll Plaza to promote responsible drinking as part of the road safety campaign in the province.

KZN Liquor Authority acting CEO Bheki Mbanjwa said they hold such campaigns as part of social responsibility efforts throughout the year.

“We are not telling people not to drink, we are saying do so in a responsible manner. Today we will be at Umvoti plaza and what we will be doing with the Department of Transport is handing out pamphlets and educating motorists about responsible drinking,” said Mbanjwa.

Mbanjwa added that the Liquor Authority would also be targeting KZN beaches.

“We have also noticed that holidaymakers have the tendency to swim after consuming alcohol. We can’t have this situation on the beaches where people are drowning because of consuming alcohol.”

Mbanjwa said they would also be going to Richards Bay to meet with traders on December 19.

“We want to meet with traders as we have noticed a spike in incidents at alcohol establishments. We want to emphasise the importance of licences and security to ensure the safety of members of the public. We also want to reiterate that we will check for compliance with traders.”
